What is this research for?
The Calming Minds research project is a large-scale research effort investigating cognitive behavioral therapy and overthinking, worry, and rumination, also called repetitive negative thoughts. UCLA is recruiting Imperial Valley College students to join this project to help us learn exactly what strategies work best for addressing negative thought patterns. Specifically, we want to discover if different techniques work better for different experiences. Through participating in this study, you may help researchers develop better, personalized care.
What are the steps to check eligibility and enroll?
Participation begins with an eligibility and enrollment process. Before you officially enroll in the study, you will complete several screening activities.
To check eligibility and enroll in the study, you will need to:
- Respond to preliminary online questionnaires.
- If you are eligible to participate, download a mobile app to complete a second series of questionnaires.
- For 10 days, respond to brief, 2-minute questionnaires via the study app, six times per day.
- Complete at least 36 of the 60 app-based questionnaires to be invited to officially enroll in the study.
What should I expect as a study participant?
If you are invited to enroll and choose to participate, the study continues in two additional parts: a 16-week participation period and a 1-year follow-up.
In the first 16 weeks after enrollment, you will need to:
- Review online digital mental health materials at your own pace.
- Meet 3-6 times with a certified STAND coach to review the digital materials.
- Complete weekly questionnaires.
- At the 4-month mark, respond to brief, 2-minute questionnaires via the study app, six times per day over 10 days (i.e., 60 total responses).
About 1 year from your study start date, you will need to:
- Complete a final set of follow-up questionnaires.
How will I be compensated for my participation?
You can receive up to $200 depending on your level of participation. Compensation is paid in three parts:
- Eligibility and enrollment activities: You will receive $60 if you complete the preliminary questionnaires and at least 36 of the 60 brief app-based questionnaires.
- Weekly questionnaires after enrollment: You can receive up to $90 for completing weekly questionnaires.
- Final follow-up questionnaires: You will receive $50 for completing the final questionnaires.
